DermMedica was originally established in 1994 (under the name Kelowna Vein & Laser Centre) as an alternative solution to more invasive plastic surgery treatments in order to of meet the BC Interior’s need for a medical skin laser and vein clinic with well trained physicians. There are multiple treatments for varicose veins and spider veins because each patient is different and each presentation of venous disease is unique to everyone. Treatments may involve EVLT, Radiofrequency ablation, Sclerotherapy, Ambultory phlebectomy and some other more exotic treatments as well. With all of our vein patients we do recommend regular use of compression stockings to maximize healing and improve circulation in the veins of the lower limbs.

You will need a specific appointment with Dr. Crippen to determine the best treatment for your specific condition but you should also know that all of our treatments are performed in our own medical facility and you do not need to visit the hospital or be subjected to a general anesthetic. Most patients are surprised to hear how simple and quick it is to have those veins treated that have been bothering them for so many years.

Acne is the result of excessive oil production in the skin. Acne is not the result of diet or hygiene, rather it is usually related to genetics. Every pore in the body contains a hair and oil gland. When glands produce too much oil, the excess oil attracts fragments of dirt, debris, and bacteria leading to infection or a blockage in the pore.

When a plug has formed in a pore the top or head of the plug may be white (whitehead) or dark (blackhead). If the plug ruptures, the infectious contents can spread causing inflammatory reactions in other areas of the skin. The deeper the infection is in the skin, the more firm and cyst like the plug will become.

Shampoo hair daily, making sure to style hair in a way that minimizes hair-face contact. Try not to squeeze, scratch, pick, or rub the infected areas. Try to minimize the frequency of face touching. Apply “noncomedogenic” cosmetics and lotions in contrast to oily products.

Although treatment is not necessary for birthmarks, there are medical treatments available to remove or diminish birthmarks that affect appearance and self-esteem, or that may have cancerous properties. There are multiple treatment options for birthmarks because every birthmark is different and may combine pigment and or vascular structures. For a pigment-type birthmark, those lasers that target pigment would be the most useful, such as a 755nm laser.

For those birthmarks that are vascular in origin, we would normally use a vascular type laser such as a 595nm or 1064nm laser which will damage blood vessels specifically over pigment in the skin. In order to know what type of laser we need to use, a consultation with Dr. Crippen is always recommended.

While a strong, square jawline can be distinctly masculine and desirable in male patients, many female patients are seeking softer more feminized shape to their face. Especially in Asian females, changing the shape of the face from square to a more attractive oval shape can add a more gentle graceful appearance.

Jaw reduction surgery used to be the only option for many patients. However, patients had long recovery times, inconsistent and unnatural results. Now Botox Cosmetic has revolutionized facial reshaping. Botox allows for changing the shape of the face without a scalpel, pain, swelling and zero downtime. It’s really quite amazing.

Botox jaw reduction is a specialized technique to reduce the width of the jawline changing an overly square jawline to a more attractive oval or heart shaped face. In some patients, the the masseter muscle, a chewing muscle, is enlarged creating extra facial width and a square-like appearance to the angle of the jaw. In women, this is not the ideal shape for the face. A Botox treatment will selectively weaken this muscle over time leading to an overall reduction in the size of this muscle and allowing a rounder, more natural appearance to the jaw line.

Dr. Crippen’s special technique of injection makes this a pain free and bruise free experience. Many patients come on lunch breaks to have this procedure done and are able to return to the office immediately after. Patients typically notice softening of the masseter muscle at one week and softening of the jawline at 6 weeks. Some researchers have noticed “permanent changes” to the jawline after 2-3 treatments. However, it is reasonable for patients to expect long term benefit but not permanent changes.

Some patients mention lower rates at outside countries or facilities. Any product other than Botox (manufactured only by Allergan) should illicit serious concerns for personal safety. In addition, Dr. Crippen performs many cases of “redo” Botox Jaw Reduction performed by outside injectors. His special analysis, in addition to his skillful and precise placement of the Botox, allow for long lasting, aesthetic and symmetrical results.

Finally, some personal habits can be directly attributed to your enlarged jaw muscles (the masseter). Excessive gum chewing, chewing hard items like ice or tougher meats, all can lead to an enlarged masseter muscle. Stress can lead to bruxism (grinding your teeth at night) which can enlarge your masseter as well.
